Sachin's Story

Independence and tenacity

Sachin’s story with Fame India began in 2003.

Just 10 years old at the time, he had a diagnosis of cerebral palsy, spastic quadriplegia, severe psychomotor retardation, and seizure disorder. Sachin is wheelchair-bound and currently, he is part of Respite Care (RC).

Life-long engagement is imperative for individuals with profound NDD. At FAME India, we follow the Lifespan Approach and Sachin has achieved the following skills with constant training and practice. In Sachin's case, his parents now go visit their other child in America for extended periods with the assurance that Sachin can manage with the help of the institutions that have seen him grow for the past decade and more. At this stage, Sachin can follow basic commands like now, wait, later; his vocabulary is currently at 6-8 words. He can also eat on his own with an angled spoon with minimal spilling, sip water from a cup when offered, propel his wheelchair on even surfaces, independently move on the floor by shuffling his body, and indicate toilet needs verbally.

These milestones are the result of intensive training and therapeutic care at our Centre For Children. At the centre, we create Individualized Education Programme (IEP) for each child that helps in charting developmental goals and subsequent milestones. Sachin graduated from CFC and then moved on to RC, which was conceptualized as a response to the need to care for children like Sachin in their post-schooling phase of life.

He is very regular to the Respite Care in spite of the challenges that include 2-3 very brief seizures a day and is a mainstay at all the fun-filled monthly outings and picnics.
