Highlights from the Interschool Sports Meet
This year the Interschool Sports Meet was organized on 16th December 2016, Friday, at Kittur Rani Chenamma Kreedangana, Jayanagar 3rd Block. F
12 Schools participated in the event, which comprises of 8 Special schools and 4 Mainstream schools.
NCC cadets from National Collage and Band from Nivedita School were highly appreciated by all. The event was witnessed, appreciated and applauded by more than 600 people.

BASIC CONCEPTS AND BEHAVIOURAL MANAGEMENT - DR MANJULA KALYAN
Dr. Manjula Kalyan spoke about the importance of checking whether a child, who has come for assessment, has all the sensory skills (5 senses). We first need to check whether the child has any issues with any of the senses. Prerequisite to learning any basic concepts, the child must have the sensory skills. This is followed by the awareness of the object i.e. labelling of the object since the concept is attached to an object. She also spoke about sensorial concepts, spatial concepts, colour, shapes, numbers, etc.
In the introduction to colour concepts, she spoke about why primary colours should not be used as distracters. The child is reinforced for one and not rewarded when not showing the distracter and therefore, the child will find it difficult to learn the next primary colour which was used as a distracter for the previous. Therefore, it is better to always use a neutral colour as a distracter for example grey, black or white.
A reinforcer or a reward itself can be used as a teaching material. For example, various shaped biscuits, cookies, etc can be used to teach shapes or they can be put into a bag with a button while teaching unbuttoning.
IDuring a session, the child’s environment and experience can be used as a motivator. There must be functionality and age appropriateness in teaching a child a topic/concept.
.For example, it is inappropriate for a child to unbutton in front of everyone or in a public place or when the child has already achieved the skill. Therefore, a situation can be created, like dropping water on shirt and now the shirt needs to be changed in privacy with/without an appropriate person present.
She also talked about doing away with unnecessary teaching like reading an analog clock when digital is available, addition of higher number on paper when calculator is available, etc.
Adaptive devices are to be used but the child must be made strong in concepts. This helps the child grow into a functional and independent adult in society.
Dr. Manjula also gave a brief introduction to behavioural management and its implementations.
She spoke about importance of data maintenance and IEP, which acts as a contract between teacher and parents and as a proof of the child’s level of performance. This seminar helped us strengthen our skills in teaching basics concept.
The afternoon session covered, what is specific objective (SO) and how to write it for different skill areas. She told us the importance of specifying the correct condition and duration for each specific objective. The following questions need to be asked to self before writing any SO – when, who, what, how much and how long. While writing the target that’s to be achieved, the word ‘and’ should not be used.
The target must be singular and specific. For some skill areas like hygiene, safety, etc. the accuracy must be mentioned as 100%, because these cannot be compromised. The program has to be changed when the child is unable to achieve the goal. She spoke about the effective ways of teaching skill of matching. She showed us how a single distracter/distracters have to be presented to the child.
DAY 2 - MORNING SESSION
TEAM BUILDING ACTIVITIES
Team building activities in the form of games were conducted for all the staff. Groups were formed randomly and were made to compete with one another.
The games that were conducted are as follows - unknotting the human group knots, blind picture drawing and passing the ball by tapping. It required the group members to strategize, plan, perform to the best of their abilities, re-plan, re-strategize and perform; by cooperating, encouraging each other and by knowing each others’ strengths .
PRESENTATION BY THE PRINCIPAL
The presentation was about Introduction to Micro Teaching. Ms. Revathi spoke about the various teaching skills required by a teacher during a session.
She covered Core teaching skills, oral-visual switching, steps in micro teaching cycle, and the merits & demerits of micro teaching. The presentation was very informative as it gave us an insight into how micro teaching method helps in improving, fixing and motivating learning.
